ABOUT: Come study art in the heart of Provo. Our programs are tailored for the aspiring-professional studio artist: including three enrollment options for adults, and a weekly open figure drawing session. Our philosophy rests on three pillars:
Ability
A set of tools, capabilities, or techniques gives the artist the language to communicate. Ability is not the end in and of itself, but rather a means to an end. In our ongoing art program, students are asked to complete a semi-regimented curriculum to push the boundaries of ability--a curriculum rooted in traditional art, but branching into individualized exploration.
Voice
Our goal is not to create multiples of a single artistic voice, but rather to foster the discovery and development of new and unique artistic voices. We're interested in accepting students who have a desire to cultivate a unique voice, not only by committing to rigorous training, but also by committing to the exploration of methods, materials and concepts.
Service
We aim to instill in our students the courage and desire to share their work--to interface and dialogue with the world around them through their artwork. We will emphasize business practices, service, social media and web presence, and the creation of work that impacts a community.
ADULT PROGRAMS (Local Immersive and Remote): Academy students develop simultaneously along four basic tracks. First, a nature and memory track, with an emphasis in drawing from observation, painting live objects, working en plein air, and reproducing nature from memory. The second is an imagination track, with an emphasis in principles of design, working intuitively, and composing without reference. Third, a figure track which emphasizes understanding and depicting the human form. And fourth, a unique voice track, which begins with a synthesis of master copies and culminates in a solo exhibit by each student. Completing the entire program will likely take a minimum of two years, depending on the pace of the student. The adult programs continue year-round. We want students to enroll who are ready to roll up their sleeves and commit fifteen to forty hours per week on an ongoing basis in order to follow through to completion of the program. Graduates will leave with greater confidence in the breadth and depth of their artistic abilities, a clearer sense of what they are trying to say as artists, and practical tools to share their artwork with the world.
